Orfeo, 1981, Programme Cover

Orfeo is a late ᅠRenaissance/earlyᅠ Baroque ᅠfavola in musica, orᅠ opera, byᅠ Claudio Monteverdi, based on the ᅠGreek legend ᅠofᅠ Orpheus. It was written in 1607 for a court performance during the annualᅠ Carnivalᅠ at ᅠMantua. While ᅠJacopo Peri'sᅠ Dafne ᅠis generally recognised as the first work in the opera genre, and the earliest surviving opera is Peri'sᅠ Eurydice,ᅠ L'Orfeoᅠis the earliest that is still regularly performed.
