Orphée, 2019, Julian Calverley

Based on Jean Cocteau’s cinematic retelling of the Orpheus myth, Glass’s opera is a parable about the dangers of self-obsession.
Performed as part of ENO’s Orpheus Series, Orphée featured direction, costume and video design by Netia Jones in a staging that combined live action and projection, including fragments of Cocteau’s celebrated film. Geoffrey Paterson conducted Glass’s minimalist score.
