The Mask of Orpheus, 2019, Daniel Lismore & Vidar Logi

Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus was premiered by ENO at the London Coliseum in 1986. In 2019, the opera received its first full staging in London since its premiere, once again being performed by ENO at the London Coliseum. Performed as part of ENO’s Orpheus Series, it was directed by ENO Artistic Director Daniel Kramer with costume designs by Daniel Lismore. Conducted by ENO Music Director Martyn Brabbins and James Henshaw, they were nominated in the Outstanding Achievement in Opera category at the Olivier Awards. The opera explores the contradictions of the various versions of the Orpheus myth, with the three main characters − Orpheus, Eurydice and Aristaeus – are each represented in their human, heroic and mythical form.
