Porgy and Bess, 2018, Rachell Smith

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess was performed by ENO for the first time in 2018, more than 80 years after its premiere. The acclaimed production was directed by James Robinson and conducted by John Wilson, and the ensemble won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera.
Set in 1920s South Carolina, it is a thought provoking, gritty and spirited ‘folk opera’. When Bess is abandoned by her lover, the only person who shows her kindness is the crippled beggar Porgy. They commit to a new life together, but the destructive forces of her violent ex-lover Crown and her drug dealer Sportin’ Life work against Bess to pull the pair apart.
