Iolanthe, 2018, Steve Hoskins

Gilbert & Sullivan’s hilarious operetta is a satirical fantasy that not only targets peers of the realm and the British system of government but also offers thinly-disguised portraits of Queen Victoria and William Gladstone (Liberal PM of the day).
Award-winning director Cal McCrystal made his ENO debut in a production that embraced the chaotic physical comedy and irreverence that are his hallmarks. Iolanthe was nominated for an Olivier Award in the Outstanding Achievement in Opera category for Paul Brown’s set and costume designs.
